Just when you thought a Mets game might end without a collective gasp from the fanbase, the baseball gods decided to have a laugh. Catcher Francisco Alvarez left the game after being drilled by a fastball during what was shaping up to be a rare, stress-free 8-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. How long will he be sidelined?

The Circumstances Surrounding the Injury

In the bottom of the eighth inning, with the Mets comfortably ahead, Alvarez stepped up to the plate. What happened next felt less like baseball and more like a cruel joke. Padres Reliever Bradgley Rodriguez, who seemed to have misplaced the GPS for home plate, unleashed a 99.8 mph fastball that made a beeline for Alvarez’s left arm. The sickening thud echoed through Citi Field as the pitch slammed into him, somewhere above the elbow in the triceps area.

Alvarez immediately dropped to one knee, clutching his arm in obvious, searing pain. You could almost hear every Mets fan groaning in unison. It’s a sight no one wanted to see, especially considering the laundry list of ailments he’s already playing through.

Alvarez Is Already Playing Through the Pain

Alvarez is currently playing with a torn UCL in his right thumb that requires surgery and a fractured pinkie on his left hand. This guy’s injury report reads like a medical textbook. He’s already been on the Injured List twice this season. Adding another injury to the mix feels like putting a hat on a hat, if the first hat was made of broken bones and torn ligaments.

After taking a moment that felt like an eternity, Alvarez, ever the warrior, walked to first base. But his night was over. Manager Carlos Mendoza wisely pulled him for pinch-runner Hayden Senger. The Mets’ dugout was visibly upset, and who could blame them? Their catcher is being held together by duct tape and sheer willpower, and he just took a triple-digit heater to the arm in a game that was already decided.

Later, Alvarez was spotted in the dugout with a massive ice pack wrapped around his elbow, congratulating his teammates on the win. While it’s a relief he was on his feet, the image of him iced up is yet another worrying chapter in a season defined by them. For now, the Mets and their fans hold their breath, hoping their star catcher somehow dodged another serious bullet. Can the guy get a day off from being a human piñata? We’ll have to wait and see.
