New York Mets Lose 5-2 To the Cincinnati Reds On a Landmark Day
Imagn Images

It was a historic day at Citi Field for the New York Mets. They raised David Wright’s No. 5 to the rafters, but lost 5-2 to the Cincinnati Reds. New York’s offense helped the team take an early lead. An RBI single by DH Mark Vientos and a solo home run by Third Baseman Brett Baty helped New York lead 2-0. That was when things went south on what should have been a day of celebration.

As was the case in last night’s game, the New York Mets struggled to get outs in the middle innings. Some poor fielding helped the Reds score two runs in the top of the 6th. That was a microcosm of what has been a difficult first two games out of the All-Star break. New York’s offense had some chances but could not cash in. They loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 6th, but could not capitalize. New York had another chance in the bottom of the 9th, but stranded runners on 1st and 3rd to end the ballgame. How will tomorrow’s game go?

New York Mets Season Summary

It has been a strong season for the New York Mets. They are a game behind the National League East lead held by the Philadelphia Phillies. New York’s offense has been mediocre this season. They are 21st in the league in batting average, 14th in home runs, and eighth in home runs.

Right Fielder Juan Soto and First Baseman Pete Alonso have paced the offense. Soto is ninth in the league in home runs and fourth in On Base Percentage. Alonso is sixth in RBI and 15th in Slugging Percentage. The offense was a putrid 1-of-1o with RISP this afternoon. Alonso and Soto could not come through late in Saturday’s game. Soto struck out and Alonso flew out to record the game’s final two outs.

New York’s pitching staff has been a mixed bag this season. They are fourth in ERA, 20th in WHIP, and 11th in opposing batting average. The issue for the team has been injuries and the ineffectiveness of the bullpen. New York’s bullpen has been one of the league’s worst units over the last month. The bullpen was 16th in ERA entering this afternoon’s contest.

Final Thoughts

The New York Mets will look to avoid being swept tomorrow afternoon by the Cincinnati Reds. A sellout crowd went home with a sour taste in their mouths. A day that started with jubilation ended with a dud.
