The New York Mets had a thrilling conclusion to their Memorial Day. They defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1 thanks to a Sacrifice Fly by Shortstop Francisco Lindor. It looked like New York’s offense would be shutout, but they got on the board in the bottom of the 8th inning. A Juan Soto sacrifice fly plated New York’s first run of the afternoon.
As has been the case for the New York Mets in 2025, their pitching staff held down the fort until their offense could come around. Luckily for the Mets, their offense was up to the task. Starting Pitcher Clay Holmes surrendered one earned run over 5.2 innings of work. He lowered his ERA to a stellar 2.98. New York’s bullpen then tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to keep them in the ballgame. Will New York continue winning games by leaning on their pitching staff?
New York has had to overcome an, at times poor offense, with a great pitching staff. That was the case as well in this Memorial Day tilt. New York is 17th in batting average, 14th in home runs, and 13th in runs scored. Those offensive numbers are completely mediocre. Even though Soto had the game-winning RBI today, he has not gotten off to a good start. He is hitting a meager .233. He must revert to his former self for the New York Mets to reach their full potential.
The Mets are leading the league in ERA, 14th in WHIP, and fifth in opposing batting average. What has made this start of the season so exciting for the Mets is the fact their pitching staff is without multiple key pieces. For example, Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas have yet to make their season debuts with the ballclub. Once they return, New York’s rotation will only get better.
New York returns to the diamond tomorrow night for the middle game of their three-game set against the Chicago White Sox. The Mets have one of the best rosters in the league but must get more consistent production on offense. If they can do that and continue pitching this well, the sky is the limit for this team.
