New York Yankees Floated As Fit For New York Mets’ Pete Alonso
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees have cemented themselves as one of the best teams in baseball. They are getting the job done in every facet of the game and are legitimate World Series contenders. But, even the best teams are always looking for an upgrade; could Pete Alonso of the New York Mets be on the Yankees’ radar?

In the opinion of Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the New York Yankees would be a fit for Pete Alonso should the New York Mets look to trade him. Along with the Yankees, the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins were mentioned as fits.

The Yankees already have a lineup that is nearly impossible to navigate. Juan Soto and Aaron Judge are playing at MVP levels and Giancarlo Stanton has been consistent as well. Adding Pete Alonso to that mix would be unfair.

Alas, there is a caveat for any team that looks to acquire Pete Alonso in a trade. According to Bowden, it will be strictly a rental for whoever lands him, as all indications are that he will sign a long-term deal with the New York Mets.

“Any team interested in trading for Alonso will understand he’s just a ‘rental’ for the rest of the season and probably will re-sign with the Mets in the offseason,” Bowden wrote. (H/T Heavy)

For the New York Yankees, a rental of that magnitude could make sense. Always in championship-or-bust mode, they haven’t won a World Series since 2009. Adding Alonso could help them end that drought and provide insurance.

Alas, trades between the New York Yankees and New York Mets are rare. They have been in deals together only 16 times ever, with the last time being in 2022. Joely Rodriguez was traded from the Bronx to Queens in exchange for Miguel Castro.

In 50 games this season, Pete Alonso has a slash line of .240/.315/480. He has hit 12 home runs and 11 doubles with 26 RBI and 29 runs scored.
