Jose Miranda has had a rough last week.
The Minnesota Twins infielder was demoted from the big club over the weekend to Triple-A St. Paul. He had made a careless base-running mistake against the Detroit Tigers and, combined with his .417 OPS over 12 games, the Twins dropped him a level in hopes to get him going.
That rebound is going to have to wait a while. Miranda hadn't played a game at St. Paul yet before an injury struck.
Miranda, who hits and throws right-handed, strained his left hand while trying to handle a case of bottled water. Club officials said the case began to fall and when Miranda went to grab it and keep it from hitting the ground, he injured his hand.
There is no timetable, yet, as to when Miranda will play.
Miranda has spent most of the last three years with the Twins, including when he hit .284 with nine home runs and 49 RBI in 2024. But his struggles this season were too much for the Twins, who themselves aren't living up to expectations. As of Wednesday, Minnesota sat in fourth in the American League Central with a 7-12 record.
"I want Jose to settle down, settle in, get on the field every day, get a bunch of at-bats and find himself," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said after the demotion. "That’s what I’m looking for from him. And very likely, we’re going to need him back here and contributing at a high level. Getting him to that point is the goal right now. That’s why we’re sending him down."
The Twins have started Brooks Lee twice and Willi Castro once at third base since Miranda was sent down. In those three games, they combined to go 0 for 10.
