The Tampa Bay Rays have been on an absolute tear, winning 12 of their last 13 games. Now, starter Nick Martinez has revealed the secret to that success.
With a 3-0 win on Wednesday, the Rays swept the Toronto Blue Jays and won their sixth-straight game. For Martinez, the key has been Tampa Bay taking to the diamond with their teammates in mind, via the MLB Network.
“We’re playing for each other,” Martinez said. “We’re having a lot of fun doing it. No one is taking any selfish at-bats or thinking of themselves. They’re doing what the game is asked of them. We’re passing the baton and playing for each other.”

The Rays signed Martinez to a $13 million deal over the offseason. Through his first seven starts with the franchise, the right-hander has pitched to a 1.71 ERA and a 28/10 K/BB ratio. He’s just one example of the talent inside Tampa Bay’s loaded pitching rotation.
Their collective 3.55 ERA ranks fourth in all of baseball. The Rays have issued the sixth-fewest walks (115) while their .221 batting average against ranks fourth.
When it comes to offense, the Rays are tied for 15th with 159 runs scored. Based on their 24-12 record, that has been more than enough. But if Tampa Bay’s lineup matches their rotation, the Rays will be an even scarier opponent.
Playing in the daunted AL East, Martinez and everyone on the team knows they’ll need to be on top of their game. To start their 2026 campaign, that has been no problem. As long as they continue playing selflessly, Martinez believes the Rays will keep shining.
