The Chicago White Sox have placed infielder Nicky Lopez on waivers, per ESPN's Kiley McDaniel. This decision opens up a host of questions about what the future holds for Lopez and the White Sox at a time when the team is nearing the MLB single-season loss record.
Nicky Lopez found his way to the White Sox in a trade last November that sent left-hander Aaron Bummer to the Atlanta Braves. Known for his agility and defensive play, the 29-year-old has served as a versatile utility player, capable of covering multiple infield positions. Despite his valuable glove work, his offensive output has left plenty to be desired with a slash line of .235/.306/.287.
The White Sox' decision to place Nicky Lopez on waivers is irrevocable, meaning that if a claim is placed on the infielder, his time with Chicago will come to an end. Placing Lopez on waivers at this time would allow him to be added to a team's playoff roster if he is claimed before Sept. 1, potentially opening the door for him to contribute to a postseason run.
However, the claiming team must absorb all of Lopez's remaining salary, which may deter contenders from pulling the trigger. Lopez is due a raise from his current $4.3 million salary through arbitration amid a market in which similar talents have commanded less.
