No. 1 Texas A&M Baseball Aims to Bounce Back Against Texas State

Following a stunning collapse against Cal Poly on Sunday, No. 1 Texas A&M baseball will look to bounce back against Texas State on Tuesday. The Aggies blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning to lose their first game of the season in Sunday’s series finale against the Mustangs.

Despite Sunday’s loss, Texas A&M stayed atop the D1Baseball Top 25. The Aggies still won the series against Cal Poly, which helped keep them in the top spot. While Sunday’s defeat was unexpected, the Aggies aren’t panicking. “Baseball’s a funny game,” Head Coach Michael Earley said after Sunday’s loss. “I think a loss was bound to happen. I didn’t think we were going undefeated. So we’ve just got to continue to grow and get better.”

The Aggies will have a chance to get back in the win column when they host in-state foe Texas State on Tuesday. Dating back to 2023, Texas A&M has won 15 straight midweek games. While they’re favored to continue that streak, the Aggies must be on high alert against the Bobcats. “Everyone’s going to want to beat us, no matter what. Our guys [have to] feed off that a little bit,” Earley said.

Scouting the Bobcats

Texas State is looking to take down Texas A&M for the first time since 2019. The Aggies lead the all-time series 49-14.

The Bobcats were picked to finish eighth in the Sun Belt, a conference that sent four teams to the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Texas State hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2022, when they earned the No. 2 seed in the Stanford Regional.

This season, Texas State got off to a 4-0 start, which included a neutral site victory over Oklahoma State, before losing two out of three against Illinois. The Bobcats are scoring five runs per game this season and are led by sophomore Ethan Farris, who is hitting .407 on the year. Farris has started every game of the young season.

While the Bobcats have shown some offensive promise, their pitching struggled in the series against Illinois, allowing 24 runs across three games. This is an area the Aggies can exploit, especially as they look to reignite their offense after a rough series against Cal Poly. The Aggies will have to break through offensively without the 2024 SEC Freshman of the Year, Gavin Grahovac, who is out for the season. The team announced Monday that the sophomore third baseman will miss the remainder of 2025 because of shoulder surgery. Grahovac’s absence leaves a major hole in the Aggies’ infield and lineup.

In Grahovac’s absence, look for continued production from Preseason First Team All-SEC selections Jace LaViolette and Hayden Schott. Both players struggled against Cal Poly but have proven to be explosive offensive weapons. With Grahovac out, the Aggies will need consistent production from their stars if they hope to live up to preseason expectations, and that starts with a strong outing against Texas State.

First pitch between the Aggies and Bobcats is set for 6:00 p.m. After their midweek matchup with Texas State, the Aggies will travel to Houston for the Astros Foundation College Classic. In the multi-team event, they will play Arizona, Oklahoma State and Rice.
