The New York Mets need gutsy performances if they’re going to reach the postseason. Nolan McLean has given the fan base an injection of belief by delivering in his rookie season.
On Thursday, McLean earned a vital victory in the Amazins’ playoff push. He helped the Mets to an 8-5 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. McLean tossed 5.1 innings, allowed five hits, and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts.
He did run into trouble at times and surrendered three home runs. Still, he showed a lot of moxie on the mound. His excellent movement keeps hitters off balance and forces some silly-looking swings.
McLean’s sweeper and curveballs run with tremendous spin and break. He can dial up his fastball to 96 miles per hour and beyond – occasionally reaching 98 miles per hour.
Nolan McLean continues to impress in the bigs.

The 24-year-old right-hander is 5-1 through his first eight career starts with an ERA of 2.06 and a WHIP of 1.04.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza feels confident whenever he hands the ball to McLean.
“You feel good about your chances every time he takes the baseball,” Mendoza told SNY. “Today was the perfect scenario, a couple of guys on and he's up to 91-92 pitches and you still feel really good about him getting out of that situation. I'm going to continue to say, the way he makes adjustments, recognizing what's working for him. Today was the cutter and he kept going after, using that pitch. There's a lot to like, and he's got so many weapons as well."
McLean has enjoyed an incredible rise in 2025. Prior to spring training, he ranked outside the top 100 MLB prospects. Now, he’s pushed himself to 36th overall and fifth among right-handed pitchers.
Since being called up on Aug. 16, McLean has been key in lifting a Mets’ rotation that’s been beset by injuries. Tylor Megill, Frankie Montas and Christian Scott each have been shut down by Tommy John surgery.
The 82-77 Mets currently hold the final National League Wild Card place. With three games remaining, McLean will only be able to watch from the dugout when the Mets visit the Miami Marlins to close out the 2025 regular season.
Should the Mets reach the Wild Card Round, he’ll have the opportunity to show his electric stuff on the playoff stage.
