Notable update emerges on concerning Kevin Gausman development

The Chicago Cubs may have a concerning injury to deal with amid their pursuit to secure a ticket to the playoffs.

Chicago pitcher Kevin Gausman appeared to be hurt in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Ill., when he tried to apply a diving tag on Miami outfielder Heriberto Hernandez at third base.

Gausman made the play but was clearly in discomfort after getting up. A trainer checked on him afterward before he left the game.

After the game, Counsell shared a bit of an update on the right-hander.

“His left shoulder got extended kind of weird. Just grabbed on him a little bit. He’s a little sore right now, but we’ll treat it and see how he is in the next couple of days,” Cubs manager Craig told reporters in the postgame press conference, via Marquee Sports Network.

Gausman had already thrown 101 pitches, so Counsell’s decision to pull him was likely more about pitch count than injury concerns.

Either way, Gausman’s status is something worth monitoring.

Gausman allowed two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and a walk in 5 2/3 innings of work for a still-solid start, but Chicago ended up losing to the Marlins, 3-2.

The Cubs need just one more win or a loss by the Arizona Diamondbacks to clinch a playoff spot.
