One of the biggest trades in Toronto Blue Jays history was made on this day a decade ago.
On July 28, 2015, the Toronto Blue Jays sent José Reyes, Jeff Hoffman, Miguel Castro, and Jesus Tinoco to the Colorado Rockies for LaTroy Hawkins and Troy Tulowitzki. For me and many other fans out there, this made me go from a casual viewer to a diehard Blue Jays fan.
Of course, adding an All-Star-calibre shortstop to a dangerous lineup only helped the Blue Jays. In 2014, Tulowitzki slashed .340/.432/.603 with 21 home runs in 375 plate appearances for a 170 wRC+. From 2009 until 2014, Tulowitzki slashed .309/.385/.553 with 143 home runs in 2,853 plate appearances.
Two days later, Tulowitzki hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third in his debut game, kicking starting a magical run in 2015 that has only been rivalled by what the Blue Jays are doing in 2025.
Although the production he had from 2009 until 2014 never materialized in a Blue Jays uniform, he hit one of the biggest home runs of the 2015 postseason for the Jays, a three-run blast a home against the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series.
Hawkins made an impact as well. At the age of 42, Hawkins posted a 2.76 ERA and 2.77 FIP in 16.1 innings with the Jays after the trade, retiring after they fell in six games to the Royals that postseason. As for what they gave up, two of the four players are out of the league (Reyes and Tinoco). Castro has made a nice big league career for himself, while Hoffman returned to the Blue Jays and is their current closer.
The Tulowitzki trade wasn’t the Blue Jays’ only big trade on July 28. In 1995, they traded pitcher David Cone to their American League East rivals, the New York Yankees. The return of Jason Jarvis, Mike Gordon, and Marty Janzen wasn’t great, especially as Cone went on to win a World Series with the Yankees in 1997 and 1999.
In 2019, the Blue Jays traded Eric Sogard to the Tampa Bay Rays for a minimal return. A few hours later, the Jays traded Marcus Stroman to the New York Mets for Simeon Woods Richardson and Anthony Kay, the latter being used in a package to land José Berríos two seasons later.
A year before the Tulowitzki trade, the Blue Jays traded Liam Hendriks and Erik Kratz to the Royals for Danny Valencia. In 1999, the Jays traded Tom Davey and Steve Sinclair to the Seattle Mariners for David Segui.
