Gleyber Torres hit his 150th career home run Thursday night—and once again, the Phillies were on the receiving end. The Tigers infielder launched a solo shot at Citizens Bank Park, marking another milestone in a quietly steady career.
Torres hit his first big league homer on May 4, 2018, off Josh Tomlin at Yankee Stadium. No. 100? That came April 3, 2023, also at Yankee Stadium and yet again against Philadelphia. Now, No. 150 lands in 2025, sporting a Tigers uniform but still with a familiar opponent on the mound.
Over eight seasons, Torres has homered off 123 different pitchers, establishing himself as a persistent thorn in many a pitcher's side—especially those from Baltimore. In 2019, he famously blasted 13 homers against the Orioles, including three off David Hess alone. He’s also taken Eduardo Rodriguez deep on three occasions and blasted grand slams off Oliver Drake and Ryan Yarbrough.
The numbers bring out the story behind the stats. He has 89 solo shots, two grand slams, a memorable walk-off in his rookie year, and multiple multi-homer games to his name. Notably, during his stint with the Tigers, Torres has blasted 12 homers this season, a strong showing that adds a fresh chapter to his illustrious resume.
At just 28 years old, Torres has now posted five seasons with double-digit home run totals, including a breakout 38-homer year in 2019, and consecutive years topping 20 homers in both 2022 and 2023. And while his role and uniform have changed from pinstripes to sporting the Olde English “D,” the spark in his swing clearly remains.
Torres, an All-Star this season, has revitalized his career in Detroit, but the milestone is a reminder that Torres has had a solid career, no matter how reviled he was in the Bronx.
The league around him may have evolved, but Gleyber Torres, ever the crafty slugger, continues to remind us that when you’re in the zone, every pitch is just another chance to make history.
