Orioles Acquire Rece Hinds

The Orioles announced that they have acquired outfielder Rece Hinds from the Marlins in exchange for cash considerations. The club’s 40-man roster currently sits at 39 players.

Hinds is on the move for the second time this season. He was dealt from the Reds to the Marlins in late May. Cincinnati had designated him for assignment. Hinds played in just one game with Miami. He went 0-for -2 with a strikeout. The performance helped maintain his 50% strikeout rate in the big leagues this year.

The 25-year-old Hinds has shown big power at times, but it’s always come with an untenable strikeout rate. He’s punched out at a massive 42.1% clip in parts of three big-league seasons. Hinds has struck out 27.6% of the time in 57 games at Triple-A this year. That’s a more reasonable number, though it’s come against minor league pitching.

Hinds burst onto the scene in his first taste of the big leagues back in 2024. He went 11-for-22 with five home runs and 11 RBI in his first six games with the Reds. Hinds quickly faded from there and played sparingly down the stretch. He played in just 15 games last season. Cincinnati gave the outfielder an extended run in Spring Training this year. He appeared in 21 spring games and put together a typical performance. Hinds had 10 extra-base hits, including five home runs, while striking out 30.2% of the time.

Baltimore collects another mid-20s outfielder it can evaluate over the final two months of the season. The club also landed Christian Franklin in a trade with the Nationals. The Orioles have at-bats available in the outfield after sending Taylor Ward to Seattle. It wouldn’t take much to supplant Leody Taveras in right field or Tyler O’Neill at DH. Hinds could find his way onto the MLB roster at some point down the stretch. Baltimore has already found success reviving a former Reds prospect this year, with Christian Encarnacion-Strand off to a strong start.
