The Baltimore Orioles may be losing another catcher due to injuries this season. In the second inning Sunday, New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm rounded the bag in a close play at home, resulting in a collision that led to Maverick Handley exiting the game.

Though the collision appeared unintentional, Chisholm stumbled slightly after losing one of his cleats as he was rounding third base. By the time he regained his footing, it was already too late as both players collided, leading to Gary Sanchez replacing Handley.
This injury could not have come at a worse time for the Orioles, who currently sit in last place in the American League East. Star catcher Adley Rutschman was sidelined recently and put on the 10-day injured list due to an oblique strain that will likely keep the primary backstop out until the All-Star break.
Although the Orioles have Samuel Basallo in the minor leagues, it is highly unlikely that they will consider promoting the top prospect who has been on fire this past season. For now, Baltimore will likely have to rely on Sanchez for the time being as the everyday catcher and hope he’s able to provide the lineup with some much-needed help.
