The current No. 1 ranked prospect for the Baltimore Orioles, Samuel Basallo, is currently having his best month in triple-A.

Ranked also as the No. 1 catching prospect by several outlets, Basallo struggled to hit his stride early in the season for the Norfolk Tides (Orioles triple-A affiliate). In the month of April he had a .259 batting average. He followed it with a .234 average in the month of May. In June however he has broken out. Over 14 games he has a .352 BA, a .435 OBP, and has hit six home runs.

Basallo in 2021 was signed to Baltimore on an international free agent deal for 1.3 million. Since then he has climbed the ladder of the Orioles farm league system. Despite the first two months of this season not being to Basallo's standards in his second year of triple-A, he has showcased what helped him claim the No.1 organization prospect rank this month. Thus, leading to the question is the 20 year old ready to take the next step to the MLB?

With Orioles' catcher Adley Rutschman hitting the injured list for the first time in his four-year career, it seemed like this could be a real possibility. But Baltimore showed that they initially were not ready to make that move. They instead called up catcher Maverick Handley.

In Handley's first game for the organization he left the game after a big collision at home plate. It was recently announced that he was placed on the seven day injured list due to a concussion.

With Handley and Rutschman's injuries, the Orioles still opted to look elsewhere to fill the catcher position once again. They signed veteran catcher Chadwick Tromp, leaving Basallo still in the minors for the time being.
