With the trade deadline looming, it seems like phones are ringing for the Baltimore Orioles.
Even before the season began, many believed that the Orioles were expected to be buyers at this year's trade deadline. Fresh off a 91-win season, Baltimore entered 2025 with a legitimate chance to contend in the American League East.
Instead, a season marred by injuries, regression, and underperformance has pushed the team into unfamiliar territory: selling.
Orioles general manager Mike Elias confirmed as much in a recent appearance on MLB Network Radio, explaining that players on expiring contracts are "at the top of the list to move." However, he didn't rule out discussions on long-term pieces.
The Orioles now find themselves in a rare position of power in a thin sellers' market. If the Arizona Diamondbacks stand pat, a possibility that remains unlikely, Baltimore could headline this year's group of available talent.
Among those likely to move: Ryan O'Hearn, Cedric Mullins, Charlie Morton, Gregory Soto and Seranthony Domínguez, all impending free agents. There's also speculation around players with club control, including closer Félix Bautista and outfielder Ramón Laureano.
For a club with a highly regarded farm system and a wave of young talent still emerging, this deadline presents an opportunity for the Orioles to reload and position themselves for a bounce-back in 2025.
As Jim Bowden of The Athletic writes, "The Orioles are in a strong position to take advantage of their misfortune and a thin trade market." But beneath the surface, this isn't just about reshaping the roster; it's about the future of the front office itself.
Bowden reports that "many in the business believe" Elias' job could be in jeopardy if the Orioles don't get this deadline right. Despite his reputation as one of the industry's best drafts, a reputation bolstered again by Baltimore's widely praised 2025 MLB Draft, the reality is Baltimore's rebuild hasn't yet produced postseason results beyond early exits.
"A strong deadline could save Elias’ job. A lackluster deadline performance could result in the Orioles bringing in someone new to the front office to work under Elias or maybe even showing him the door. I believe he’ll get the job done."
For Elias, this trade deadline isn't just about shaping Baltimore's future, but it may decide his own.
