Orioles have a Gunnar Henderson contract problem

The Baltimore Orioles avoided arbitration with Gunnar Henderson earlier this offseason, agreeing to a one-year deal worth $8.5 million for the 2026 season.

Contracts like this happen every winter. When a young star like Henderson reaches arbitration eligibility, both sides settle on a number, and the organization will move forward for another year while larger questions wait.

Negotiating with a cornerstone talent

The Orioles are not negotiating with an everyday contributor who happens to be entering arbitration. Henderson is quickly emerging as the backbone of the organization, and the Orioles will soon face a decision that could shape the direction of the franchise over the course of the next 10 years.

Henderson does not become an unrestricted free agent until 2029, so until then, Baltimore remains in control. From a front-office perspective, it has plenty of time to think things through before signing him to a big deal. Henderson has several seasons to go before the discussion of a long-term contract becomes unavoidable. Baseball rarely works neatly once a player proves he belongs among the best at his position. Performance tends to accelerate the timeline.

Henderson already provides middle-of-the-order power from the left side while holding down one of the most demanding spots on the field. Baltimore can place him at shortstop or slide him to third base, depending on roster needs, a level of defensive flexibility few power hitters offer. That combination places him in rare company around the league.

Gunnar Henderson is already Orioles' most valuable player

Adley Rutschman anchors the Orioles lineup behind the plate. Jackson Holliday represents another foundational piece for the future. Both names receive plenty of attention when conversations turn toward Baltimore’s young core. Henderson often looks like the player who connects everything.

Pitchers approach the Orioles lineup differently when Henderson steps into the box. Defensive stability up the middle also benefits the entire roster. Values like that do not remain affordable forever.

Will Gunnar Henderson be a long-term piece of the puzzle?

Arbitration will continue to raise Henderson’s salary over the next several seasons. Another All-Star appearance or two would push those numbers even higher. By the time Baltimore approaches the final year of team control, Henderson could easily command the type of contract usually reserved for the sport’s elite players. Those deals now stretch well beyond $200 million.

The Orioles built their current roster through the draft as opposed to bigger long-term commitments. After several years of rebuilds, they have developed one of the best farm systems in MLB. Over the past few years, that pipeline of talent has begun delivering.

Franchises must decide whether homegrown stars become long-term cornerstones or eventual departures. Organizations across the league have faced the same moment with players who helped end rebuilding cycles. Some teams extend those players early. Others allow arbitration to run its course and deal with the consequences later. Baltimore still has time to act.

Continued production would only strengthen his position in future negotiations. Market value rises quickly for players who combine power, defensive ability and consistency at a premium position.

The Orioles wanted a player like Henderson when the rebuilding years began. Now that they have him, the question is whether they pull the trigger and sign him to that big deal he will eventually see, whether it's with Baltimore or another organization.
