The Baltimore Orioles made a catching change Friday, activating veteran Jake Rogers after acquiring him from the Detroit Tigers ahead of the trade deadline. To clear a roster spot, Baltimore designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment, the club announced.

Rogers will wear No. 27 as he joins an Orioles team searching for stability behind the plate while battling through multiple injuries at catcher.

The move comes one day after Baltimore traded for Rogers, whose defensive reputation and experience were key reasons behind the acquisition. The Orioles entered the week without both Adley Rutschman and top prospect Samuel Basallo because of injuries, forcing the club to rely on a revolving group of backup catchers.

Those replacements struggled offensively, combining for just two hits in their previous 35 at-bats. Baltimore hopes Rogers' pitch framing, game calling and throwing ability can help steady its pitching staff even after an inconsistent offensive season.

Rogers appeared in 34 games with Detroit this season, batting .161 with three home runs and nine RBIs before losing his roster spot. While his bat has cooled, the Orioles prioritized his defensive value as they attempt to remain competitive during the final stretch before the Monday trade deadline.

Tromp, meanwhile, now enters the waiver process after appearing in 21 major league games this season between the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles. If he clears waivers, he can either accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk or elect free agency.

Baltimore enters Friday's series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies at 53-56 and fourth in the American League East. With Rutschman and Basallo still sidelined, the Orioles will count on Rogers to provide immediate defensive stability behind the plate while they continue fighting to stay within reach of the postseason race.
