The Baltimore Orioles announced Monday afternoon that they have placed right-hander Zach Eflin on the 15-day injured list with lower back discomfort. In a corresponding move, the O's have recalled Brandon Young.
Injuries to his back are common for the right-hander, as he has a prolonged history of back injuries, which were starting to become apparent during his time with the Tampa Bay Rays.
This news of Eflin's IL stint comes just two days after his previous start, in which he allowed four earned runs in the first inning of his outing on 28 pitches. The 31-year-old's first IL stint was all the way back on April 8 when he suffered a right lateral strain. There is no telling how long this IL stint will last, but in 12 starts this year for the O's, he has a 5.95 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.
Young, Baltimore's No. 19 prospect, is set to replace Eflin in the starting rotation and is set to start against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday at Globe Life Field. He has appeared for the O's in three spot starts this year and has recorded a combined 7.11 ERA in that span.
In seven games pitched for Triple-A Norfolk, he posted a 2-1 record with a 2.70 ERA in 33.1 innings pitched, while recording 36 punchouts and obtaining a 0.99 WHIP.
