Orioles' Trey Mancini gets standing ovation in return from colon cancer

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini missed the pandemic-shortened season last year as he was battling colon cancer. Mancini is now cancer-free, and he returned to the diamond on Sunday for the Orioles' first Grapefruit League game of spring training.

The 28-year-old was initially given a partial ovation after warmups concluded and received a full standing ovation at Ed Smith Stadium before his first at-bat.

Mancini was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in March 2020. He underwent surgery to remove a malignant tumor and has since completed six months of chemotherapy.

The Notre Dame product was the O's top hitter and most popular player before being sidelined. In 2019, he slashed .291/.364/.535 with 35 home runs and 97 RBI. In his first appearance in over a year, Mancini went 1-for-2 in a 6-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
