Owner Ken Kendrick aims for franchise record payroll after World Series run

The Arizona Diamondbacks have routinely been toward the bottom of the pack in regard to team payroll in the MLB; however, owner Ken Kendrick is determined to change that this offseason.

Already, coming off a run to the World Series, the Diamondbacks have acquired two big names in the form of Eduardo Rodriguez and Eugenio Suarez.

But, at least according to their owner, Ken Kendrick, this is just the beginning of a spending spree that they will be going on this winter.

Kendrick told Alex Weiner at AZSports that his goal is to have the Diamondbacks payroll the highest it has been in franchise history. Kendrick added, “We have more to do and [Mike Hazen] has given the authority to go make the team better than it is as we sit here today.”

Currently, the Diamondbacks are 18th in the league with a payroll around $130 million. In regard to their competition in the NL West, they are last, even below the Rockies.

Already, Arizona’s two most recent acquisitions are 1st and 3rd when it comes to adjusted salary.

If Ken Kendrick is truly serious about breaking a franchise record, then the number to beat is $132 million, which was the team’s payroll in 2018.

Some names that the Diamondbacks have expressed interest in over the past couple of weeks include J.D. Martinez, Justin Turner, and Jorge Soler.
