The San Diego Padres, known for making bold moves during the trade season, have once again made headlines by acquiring one of the top relievers available. In a deal finalized just hours before the trade deadline, the Padres obtained left-handed closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins. This acquisition aims to strengthen their bullpen as they push for a playoff spot.
In exchange for Scott, who will become a free agent at the end of the season, the Padres sent a package of four prospects to the Marlins. The package was headlined by starting pitcher Robby Snelling, who was ranked as the 59th best prospect in baseball by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel at the beginning of the season. Additionally, the Padres traded starter Adam Mazur and infielders Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears. The Padres also received right-hander Bryan Hoeing in the deal.
Tanner Scott, the centerpiece of this trade, has had an impressive season with the Marlins. The 30-year-old left-hander made his first All-Star team this year, boasting a 1.18 ERA with 18 saves in 44 appearances. Over 45 2/3 innings, Scott struck out 53 batters and issued 27 walks. His performance makes him a valuable addition to the Padres’ bullpen, which already includes formidable relievers like Robert Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, and recently acquired Jason Adam.
The acquisition of Scott is expected to solidify the back end of the Padres’ bullpen. Despite already acquiring Jason Adam, the Padres opted to strengthen their relief pitching further instead of focusing on their starting rotation. This decision comes as the team faces uncertainty regarding the return of Yu Darvish, who is on the restricted list, and Joe Musgrove, who is on the injured list with an elbow injury for the second time this season.
While the Padres have bolstered their bullpen with the trade of Marlins Tanner Scott, the team might still seek to acquire a starting pitcher before the trade deadline. With key starters on the injured and restricted lists, acquiring additional rotation depth could be crucial for their playoff push.
