According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the San Diego Padres are acquiring All-Star closer Mason Miller in a deal with the Athletics. The Padres will also receive starting pitcher JP Sears from the A’s, and are sending the No. 3 prospect in baseball, Leodalis De Vries, to Sacramento as a part of the deal. Braden Nett, Henry Baez, and Eduarniel Nunez will join De Vries as new pieces in the A’s farm.

Padres to Acquire Mason Miller, Send Leodalis De Vries to A’s

In what will go down as one of the bigger deadline day deals in recent memory, the Padres have added All-Star closer Mason Miller to their already dominant bullpen. Miller, who finished fourth in the American League Rookie of the Year race last year, currently boasts a 3.76 ERA in 38 games in 2025. Known for his high-profile fastball, nobody in baseball has a higher average fastball velocity than the 101.1 MPH his four-seam fastball owns. The Padres bullpen currently leads the league with a 2.99 ERA, and pairing Miller alongside Robert Suarez, Adrian Morejon, and Jason Adam will make it even more difficult for teams to score.

Still only 26, Miller has four years of team control on his contract, which explains why San Diego was forced to part with Leodalis De Vries, the No. 3 prospect in baseball according to MLB.com. De Vries, 18, was the top-ranked player on the international market in 2024 and has quickly made a name for himself in the Padres’ farm system. The switch-hitting shortstop has shown elite plate discipline in the minors and has shown flashes of power from both sides of the plate. Being one of the youngest players in the minor leagues, De Vries has plenty of time to develop, but a call-up to the majors within the next two years doesn’t seem far-fetched.

Along with Miller, San Diego also added LHP JP Sears. Sears owns a 4.95 ERA in 22 games this season, but figures to be a solid backend starter for the club and could find a spot in the bullpen come October. If the Padres end up moving Dylan Cease before today’s deadline, Sears may have a clearer path to sticking in the rotation.
