The San Diego Padres had a disappointing end to their 2025 season, falling to the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card round. As the organization regroups, it faces several critical roster decisions this offseason along with the task of finding a new manager following Mike Shildt’s sudden retirement. Still, the Padres have a strong core in place led by Fernando Tatis Jr. The 26-year-old outfielder delivered another solid campaign in his sixth season with San Diego.
Over 155 games, Tatis posted a .268 batting average, .368 on-base percentage, .814 OPS, 25 home runs and 32 stolen bases. He earned the third All-Star selection of his career for his performance in the first half. Tatis remains a long-term cornerstone for the franchise, signed to a 14-year, $340 million contract extension in 2021.
As Tatis enters the offseason, he received a prestigious honor on Sunday. Rawlings Baseball announced he had been selected as the recipient of the Gold Glove Award for his efforts in right field. San Diego shared Tatis’ accomplishment on X. “The Gold Standard ✨,” the Padres wrote.
This marks the second Gold Glove of Tatis’ career, further highlighting his growth as a defender. Tatis’ Gold Glove win honors the top defensive player at each position, a tradition Rawlings has upheld since 1957. What makes his recognition even more notable is his transition from shortstop to right field in 2023. In just his third season at the position, Tatis has become one of the most dependable outfielders in the game.

According to Statcast’s Baseball Savant, he posted 9 Fielding Run Value (FRV) and 8 Outs Above Average (OAA) this season. FRV estimates how many runs a defender prevents by factoring in range, arm strength and positioning. OAA focuses on range alone, measuring how many outs a player records compared to the average at his position.
Tatis continues to bring energy and athleticism to the outfield, often making plays that few others can. Whether it’s cutting off a double in the gap or unleashing a laser to third base, his defensive instincts and physical tools are on full display. The glove complements his offensive skill set, reinforcing his role as a franchise focal point in San Diego.
