Padres continue trade frenzy with deal to acquire Reds' Brandon Drury

The San Diego Padres added Juan Soto, Josh Hader and Josh Bell ahead of the trade deadline but decided they weren't done and agreed to a deal with the Cincinnati Reds for third baseman Brandon Drury.

Cincinnati will get shortstop Victor Acosta, the Padres' sixth-ranked prospect, in the deal.

Drury, 29, made his MLB debut late in the 2015 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and later had stints with the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets before signing with the Reds as a free agent in March.

He's had a breakout year with Cincinnati this season with a .274/.335/.520 slash line and career-best .855 OPS. Drury led the Reds in home runs (20) and RBI (59) this season prior to the deal.

In San Diego, Drury joins an infield that already has six-time All-Star Manny Machado at third base and hopes to get All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. back from injury soon. The Padres infield will also have Bell slotting in as the team's new first baseman after trading Eric Hosmer to the Boston Red Sox.

Acosta, 18, is batting .243 this season in the Arizona Complex League with two home runs and 11 RBI.
