Padres fire pitching coach Larry Rothschild

The San Diego Padres fell to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday and have lost nine of their last 11 contests to drop to 68-58 and one game back of the Cincinnati Reds for the National League's second wild-card spot.

On Monday, San Diego fired pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Ben Fritz will serve as the Padres' interim pitching coach for the remainder of the campaign.

"Larry has been a tremendous asset for our organization over the last two seasons, and we appreciate the experience, hard work and dedication that he brought to the position," Padres manager Jayce Tingler said in a prepared statement. "We wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Per Alden Gonzalez of ESPN, Rothschild previously spent 18 years as a pitching coach for the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs and was in the middle of his second season with San Diego. The Padres are off Monday and then host the Los Angeles Dodgers (78-47) on Tuesday.
