Padres Make Manny Machado Request Before Phillies Game

Manny Machado, San Diego Padres third baseman, is in his fourteenth major-league season and is renowned for his power and glove at the hot corner.

Machado was originally drafted third overall in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, spending seven seasons in Baltimore before the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired him during the 2018 trade deadline.

In February 2019, Machado joined the Padres on a 10-year, $300 million deal, immediately boosting a lineup in need of a right-handed power threat. That deal was extended in the 2023 offseason to an 11-year, $350 million contract that locks Machado in brown and gold through the 2033 season.

Machado has had an excellent season thus far, currently leading all National League third basemen in All-Star Game voting.

In a social-media push ahead of their series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team wrote on X, “Let’s get Manny to the All-Star Game!”

This season’s production has underscored Machado’s durability and consistency, as he owns a .293 batting average (eighth in the NL), an .835 OPS, along with 47 RBI, 13 home runs and eight stolen bases.

Over a decorated 14-year MLB tenure, Machado’s career accolades include four top-five MVP finishes, six All-Star selections, two Gold Gloves, two Silver Slugger Awards and pivotal roles in three postseason campaigns for San Diego.

The Padres are currently 45–38, holding second place in the NL West behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. As San Diego aims for another playoff berth, Machado’s bat, glove and veteran leadership will be crucial if the club wants to sustain its division push and a return to October baseball.
