Padres manager Bob Melvin, bench coach Ryan Christenson enter COVID protocols before second game of doubleheader

The San Diego Padres hosted a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. After coming out on top 2-1 in 10 innings in Game 1, the Friars got some brutal news ahead of the nightcap.

Melvin is in his first year at the helm in San Diego after being hired in October on a three-year deal. Prior to joining the Padres, Melvin had been the manager of the Oakland Athletics since 2011.

The 60-year-old has earned three Manager of the Year Awards — first in 2007 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and then in 2012 and 2018 with the A's.

Entering Game 2 of the day, San Diego held a 37-22 record and was trailing the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers by just one-half game.
