Luis Rengifo’s strong start with the San Diego Padres has been interrupted by an unfortunate injury at a crucial point in the season.
The utility infielder suffered a right knee sprain during Saturday’s 7-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, forcing him to leave the team and return to San Diego for further medical evaluation.
The Padres announced the injury on their official X account Sunday. Rengifo suffered the injury on a non-contact play in the seventh inning, and the club will now wait for additional testing to determine the severity of the issue.
Update from the Padres clubhouse: Luis Rengifo exited today’s game with a right knee sprain. He’s receiving treatment and will fly back to San Diego for further evaluation.

The timing is particularly unfortunate for Rengifo, who had provided a noticeable offensive boost since joining San Diego earlier this season.
After hitting just .205 across 57 games with the Milwaukee Brewers, Rengifo has produced a .291 average and .375 on-base percentage in 38 games with the Padres.
His versatility has also made him a useful piece for a San Diego team trying to remain in the National League postseason picture.
The Padres entered Sunday at 72-64, sitting behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West while remaining involved in the crowded Wild Card race.
Rengifo’s absence could therefore create another challenge for a club that has relied heavily on its pitching and aggressive baserunning throughout the season.
The immediate concern, however, is determining whether the knee sprain will cost Rengifo an extended period of time. The upcoming evaluation should provide the Padres with a clearer idea of his recovery timeline.
For now, San Diego will have to prepare for the possibility of moving forward without one of its more productive recent additions as the regular season enters its final stretch.
