As the San Diego Padres’ offseason continues, the front office is looking all over the place to improve their roster for 2024. The team knows that they underwhelmed last season, and they want to do whatever they can to make sure it doesn't happen again.
With this, they are looking into potentially bringing back one of their unsung heroes from last year. That would be veteran catcher Gary Sanchez, who joined the team mid-year, but provided them with a huge spark.
In 72 games with the Friars, Sanchez hit .218 with 18 home runs and 46 runs batted in. The numbers aren't eye-popping at first glance, but Sanchez did provide much-needed veteran experience to the team.
Padres insider Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the two sides are talking about a reunion for next season.
"The Padres also are in the market for a second catcher, and it could well be Gary Sánchez, who hit 19 home runs in 234 at-bats for them last season. The sides are talking, and a deal could run $6 to $8 million per year."
Sanchez would likely return as a backup for the Padres, but he fit in well with the team. Before joining San Diego, there was a time when Sanchez wasn't sure about his big league future, so this could be a mutually beneficial signing.
He brings experience to the table, which is something that the Padres need from the catching spot. They don't know how their pitching staff will look this coming season, so having a guy like Sanchez around could make all the difference.
It does feel like we are heading toward the two sides connecting on a number to bring him back, and hopefully, he can continue to provide this team with value next year.
