Padres Rumors: Friars Have ‘No Plans’ to Bring Blake Snell, Josh Hader Back, Says MLB Insider

The Padres entered the 2023 season expecting to be in the conversation as one of the best teams in all of baseball. Now, it would take nothing short of a miracle for the Padres to make their way into the playoffs.

With the third-highest Opening Day payroll in MLB, the Padres spent a lot of money for little reward. They might start shaking off some of that excess in the offseason.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Padres have no intention of re-signing upcoming free agents Blake Snell and Josh Hader for the 2024 season.

"The San Diego Padres, who had the third-highest opening-day payroll in baseball, have no plans to bring back free agents Blake Snell or Josh Hader in 2024."

Snell has likely secured the 2023 National League Cy Young award as his 2.25 ERA is the lowest in baseball. He will command a high price in free agency, likely dissuading the Padres from pursuing one of the best pitchers in the game.

As for Hader, he's been one of the best closers in the league, with a 1.19 ERA and 31 saves. He will also command top dollar when free agency begins.

Other reports have suggested the Padres adopting a similar philosophy, as President of Baseball Operations AJ Preller, the Padres front office and/or manager Bob Melvin could all be looking for work after this season.

With slugger Juan Soto eligible for salary arbitration, the Padres could also be looking to trade him in the offseason. However, Nightengale reported that the Friars' front office is currently undecided on Soto's future with the team.
