Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. to undergo wrist surgery, out up to three months

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will have surgery after fracturing his wrist during the offseason, general manager A.J. Preller told reporters on Monday.

The star infielder could miss up to three months.

Injuries played a big role in Tatis' 2021 campaign, his third with the Padres. Despite missing long stretches of time due to shoulder issues, the All-Star shortstop made an impact when in the lineup and led the league with 42 home runs. He ended the year slashing .282/.364/.611.

Tatis, 23, made headlines during the 99-day owner-imposed MLB lockout for speaking out against the league's proposal to use an international draft to select prospective players from countries such as his native Dominican Republic.

"The International Draft is going to kill baseball in DR," Tatis told news outlet El Caribe.
