Padres star SS Fernando Tatis Jr. activated, to bat second vs. Dodgers

The 22-year-old went down to what the MLB website refers to as a partially dislocated left shoulder and partially torn labrum during a forceful swing of his bat during the April 5 game against the San Francisco Giants and hasn't played since. He previously suffered a shoulder setback in spring training and recorded three hits in his first 18 regular-season at-bats with seven strikeouts through his final appearance on April 5. 

He agreed to a 14-year, $340 million contract extension with the Padres in February.

Before Friday's news was made official, ESPN's Alden Gonzalez wrote how Tatis admitted before Opening Day that he's dealt with shoulder problems "since rookie ball." Gonzalez spoke with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Alan Beyer about what fans could expect to see from Tatis this season. 

"I think the first time [a subluxation is diagnosed], everyone would agree that the right thing to do is shut him down, let things settle down, rehab him, build up his rotator cuff a little bit, and let him go back to swinging a bat to see how it feels, let him go back to throwing and see how it feels, and try to nurse him back off the injured list," Dr. Beyer explained. "If that fails, he's looking at having the shoulder stabilized. If it fails soon, in a month or six weeks, he's gonna have to have it fixed this season, and basically the season is over. If he has surgery, the season is over."
