The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Paul Gervase from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned Alexis Díaz prior to Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.
This marks a second time Gervase has been added onto the active Dodgers roster since being acquired as part of a three-team trade. The Dodgers also received Ben Rortvedt and Adam Serinowski in the deal that involved the Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays.
Gervase at the time was 2-3 with four saves, a 3.12 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 28 games (one start) for Triple-A Durham this year. He averaged 14.06 strikeouts per nine innings with the Bulls.
The 25-year-old had joined the Rays just over one month before the trade and pitched to a 4.56 ERA in five appearances. Gervase struck out five batters over 6.1 innings, but also walked five.
Gervase was drafted by the New York Mets in the 12th round in 2022, but made his MLB debut with the Rays this season. The right-hander joined the Tampa Bay organization when he was acquired from the Mets in exchange for Tyler Zuber at the 2024 deadline.
Gervase joined the Dodgers immediately after the trade but only spent one day with the team and didn’t pitch before getting optioned as the corresponding move to Blake Snell coming off the 60-day injured list.
Díaz was 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA in nine games for the Dodgers while striking out nine hitters and walking two with five runs allowed over nine innings.
He was acquired on May 29 from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league pitcher Mike Villani.
The 28-year-old was a National League All-Star in 2023, going 9-6 with a 3.07 ERA with 37 saves in a career-high 71 games. Since joining the Dodgers, he has been working to get back to that point.
“Just making adjustments to the mechanics,” Díaz said on Aug. 15. “Trying to find those angles, trying to find that arm slot that was very successful for me when I was in Cincinnati, but just making those mechanical adjustments.”
Díaz is in his fourth Major League season, and he is 75-for-86 in save opportunities with a 3.29 ERA in 205 games.
He was drafted by the Reds in the 12th round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of Juan Jose Maunez High School (Puerto Rico).
