Pete Alonso: Mets will be 'even scarier' once offense awakens

Add slugger Pete Alonso to the list of New York Mets players seemingly unbothered over criticisms directed toward the team's offense throughout the first half of April.

"I feel like our potential is through the roof," a confident Alonso declared, as shared by Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "It’s still early, but once we get all clicking and having some momentum built up a little bit, I feel like this can be a really good start for us and a really good test with this West Coast trip."

The Mets largely failed to look like legitimate World Series contenders over their first 13 games and are heading to California with a lackluster 7-6 record. According to ESPN stats, New York began Thursday evening 28th in all of MLB with a .218 team batting average and tied for 21st with 51 total runs scored.

The Mets' offensive woes caused individuals such as Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports to say earlier this week that it's already time for the organization to promote at least top-tier prospect Brett Baty so the big-league club can "utilize its best roster."

After the Mets were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers last week, star shortstop Francisco Lindor insisted the Amazins still had "what it takes" and "the 'it' factor." Alonso, who began Thursday night tied for the MLB lead with six home runs on the season, echoed Lindor's take.

"Once we get our momentum going, I feel like we're going to be an even scarier ballclub," Alonso added. "We have a really deep lineup and put together really tough at-bats, long at-bats. I think we have a chance to really get rolling here."

The Mets next play at the Oakland Athletics on Friday night. Oakland fell to 3-10 on the campaign via an 8-7 loss at the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon.
