Pete Alonso Sends Heartfelt Message After Awful Mets News

The New York Mets won their second straight game on Thursday night, but it came at a cost. Starting pitcher Griffing Canning left in the third inning with a leg injury, which further compromises an already-shorthanded rotation.

The right-hander sustained the ailment when his foot hit the ground at an awkward angle while tracking Atlanta Braves shortstop Nick Allen's ground ball. Reliever Austin Warren came in with 2.1 scoreless innings, and the rest of the bullpen finished the shutout from there. New York won 4-0, with the victory credited to Warren.

Mets star Pete Alonso spoke about Canning postgame, who may have a season-ending Achilles injury, via SNY.

"All well-wishes to Grif, that's obviously a really tough blow," he said. "It's obviously not good for him, so prayers and blessings to him."

Canning is 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA over 16 starts this season. The Mets are still without fellow starters Kodai Senga (hamstring) and Tylor Megill (elbow) as well.

Thursday's game was scoreless until New York outfielder Tyrone Taylor hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alonso followed up with an RBI single in the fifth before Jeff McNeil's two-run single in the seventh.

Juan Soto scored twice, while Alonso and Francisco Lindor each scored once. The star trio are all finalists on the All-Star ballot.

The Mets are now a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East. They also have the third-best record in the NL, a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs and three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Next up for New York is a road clash with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.
