The Philadelphia Phillies have officially begun Spring Training, meaning that Opening Day is right around the corner. The team made some changes to their 26-man roster in the offseason. Here’s a look at what that might look like on March 26th.

Starting Pitchers

(5) Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Taijuan Walker, Andrew Painter

Philadelphia’s opening day starting rotation will be missing a very impactful piece. Zack Wheeler will open the year on the IL as he continues to recover from last year’s season-ending injury.

Sanchez, Luzardo, Nola, and Walker return to the rotation with only one big difference. The loss of Ranger Suarez in free agency opened a spot for Painter, one of the Phillies’ most highly touted prospects. He will finally make his highly anticipated debut in 2026.

Relief Pitchers

(8) Jhoan Duran, Brad Keller, Jose Alvarado, Orion Kerkering, Tanner Banks, Jonathan Bowlan, Zach McCambley, Kyle Backhus

Philadelphia’s bullpen is greatly improved from this time last year. Duran will have the ninth inning, with Keller, Kerkering, and Alvarado bridging the gap. Banks returns in 2026 with a much bigger role, replacing Matt Strahm as a reliable late-inning lefty.

Bowlan was acquired in the Strahm trade, making him an easy pick to make the roster. McCambley was selected in the rule five draft, meaning the only way he isn’t on the roster is if the Phillies want to give him up completely and send him back to the Miami Marlins.

Backhus has drawn a ton of attention early in spring training due to his funky delivery. Other options for the final bullpen spot include Zach Pop, Seth Johnson, Max Lazar, Chase Shugart, and Tim Mayza.

Catcher

(2) JT Realmuto, Rafael Marchan

The catcher position in Philadelphia will continue to be locked down by Realmuto. The Phillies have repeatedly said the plan is to get him off his feet more, but they haven’t put any effort into that. Could this be the year Marchan has a bigger role behind the veteran Realmuto?

Infield

(4) Bryce Harper, Bryson Stott, Trea Turner, Alec Bohm

The Phillies’ infield will look very familiar on opening day. They looked to be adding Bo Bichette before he pivoted to the New York Mets. Bohm will be the only one to keep an eye on early in the season. The upcoming free agent is expected to be pressured by one of the MLB’s top prospects, Aidan Miller, for the 3B position.

Outfield/DH

(4) Brandon Marsh, Justin Crawford, Adolis Garcia, Kyle Schwarber

Philadelphia’s outfield has been the direct target of criticism due to a lack of production over the past few seasons. Marsh is the only returning member; he will be joined by Crawford, a top prospect, and Garcia, the team’s only free agency addition on offense. Schwarber will remain the DH after re-signing in the offseason.

Bench/Utility

(3) Dylan Moore, Edmundo Sosa, Otto Kemp

The Phillies’ bench unit is an extremely versatile group with tons of different options. Sosa and Kemp return with locked spots on the 26-man roster. Kemp will likely be a part of a platoon in LF with Marsh.

Moore was a late addition on a minor league deal and an invite to spring training. He has a ton of MLB experience, including being awarded a gold glove. He can play anywhere on the field and would add to the versatility portion of this unit. He will likely be competing with Bryan De La Cruz for the last bench spot.

End Of My Philadelphia Phillies Rant

Philadelphia is going to be a competitive team once again in 2026. The lack of serious additions is certainly disappointing; however, the team has been consistently good for years with this core. It comes down to the bats performing when it matters most, something that has been missing in the past few Octobers.
