Phillies acquire outfield depth in trade with Royals

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired outfielder Kameron Misner from the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, adding organizational depth before the August 3 MLB trade deadline.

Misner gives the Phillies a left-handed hitter capable of playing all three outfield positions. His strong Triple-A production and remaining minor league option also provide flexibility for a roster dealing with multiple injuries.

The 28-year-old batted .220 with four RBIs and three stolen bases across 18 games for Kansas City this season. He produced much better results with Triple-A Omaha, posting a .920 OPS with 13 home runs and 11 steals.

The Phillies announced the transaction Saturday on X, formerly Twitter, while detailing the return and corresponding 40-man roster move.

“The Phillies have acquired Kameron Misner from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Lehigh Valley (AAA). To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Steward Berroa has been designated for assignment.”

Philadelphia acquired Misner three days after the Royals designated him for assignment. The Royals made the move after adding reliever Nate Pearson, allowing the Phillies to obtain experienced depth at minimal cost.

The trade carries greater importance because Adolis Garcia and Johan Rojas will miss the remainder of the season. Garcia underwent surgery on his right latissimus dorsi, while Rojas required surgery to repair a torn right UCL.

Misner will not immediately join the major league roster. Instead, he gives Lehigh Valley an experienced outfielder whom Philadelphia can promote if another need develops.

The Phillies enter Saturday at 56-48, sitting 5.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The low-cost move strengthens Philadelphia’s depth without forcing the club to surrender prospect capital during the deadline’s final week.
