Phillies Acquire Outfielder in Trade With Royals

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is quickly approaching, and the Philadelphia Phillies have already made a move.

On Saturday morning, the Phillies agreed to a trade with the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Kameron Misner in exchange for cash considerations. Philadelphia immediately optioned Misner to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club designated outfielder Steward Berroa for assignment.

Misner, 28, saw limited action in the majors this season with the Royals. In 41 at-bats, he hit .220/.256/.244 with three stolen bases and a .500 OPS.

However, his numbers in the minor leagues tell a much different story. The left-handed hitter slashed .286/.378/.563 with 14 home runs, 14 stolen bases and a .941 OPS.

The Royals designated Misner for assignment after acquiring reliever Nate Pearson in a trade with the Houston Astros.

Although the Phillies immediately optioned him to Triple-A, Misner gives the organization another quality depth option for the final two months of the season.

Philadelphia has been searching for outfield help since losing starting right fielder Adolis Garcia to a season-ending right latissimus dorsi tear in June. Outside of Brandon Marsh, the Phillies have received inconsistent production from their outfield.

One of president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski's biggest priorities before the deadline is finding a right-handed hitting outfielder. Who that player will be remains unclear.

There are not many right-handed hitting outfielders expected to be available before the deadline. Luis Robert Jr. of the New York Mets, Taylor Ward of the Baltimore Orioles and Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels appear to be the top options, although Ward and Adell are far from locks to be traded.

With that in mind, adding outfield depth and taking flyers on players like Misner is a prudent strategy. Philadelphia is also in the market for a starting pitcher who reportedly could even start a playoff game.

Entering the day, the Phillies trail the Atlanta Braves by 5.5 games in the National League East and hold a one-game lead for the top NL Wild Card spot. While it would be a surprise if Philadelphia missed the playoffs, nothing is guaranteed.

Dombrowski now has nine days to find the right mix that can put the Phillies over the top.
