The Philadelphia Phillies offense has been inconsistent to begin the 2026 season, yet one player who has been productive is catcher J.T. Realmuto. The Phillies re-signed Realmuto on a three-year, $45 million contract this past offseason to keep him with the organization through his age-37 season.
Realmuto has spent the last eight years of his career in Philadelphia and has earned two All-Star selections, two Gold Glove Awards and two Silver Sluggers during his tenure while frequently delivering in October.
However, Realmuto took a step back last year offensively, and there is legitimate concern over whether the aging veteran can return to his prime form.
Realmuto, however, is doing all he can to prove he has more in the tank in 2026. Through his first eight games, he has a .240/.406/.806 slash line, providing timely hitting near the bottom of Philadelphia’s order. Unfortunately for Realmuto, he may now be looking at missing time.
During Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, Realmuto did not end up making a plate appearance. In the first inning while catching behind the plate, Realmuto was struck by a foul ball inadvertently off the bat of Giants slugger Rafael Devers.
After hobbling around for a moment, he managed to finish the inning, but by the time he came to the plate in the second inning, his backup Rafael Marchan had entered the game in his place. Moments later, the Phillies announced that he had suffered a bruised right foot (h/t Todd Zolecki of MLB.com).

Realmuto has been one of the most durable catchers in MLB. If he is forced to miss time, Marchan would step into more of an everyday role, with Garrett Stubbs likely returning to the 26-man roster.
With Realmuto off to such a strong start, the timing is unfortunate. His next chance to suit up will be Wednesday in another matchup with San Francisco, but there is a chance Realmuto could end up on the 10-day injured list.
Given both his importance to the lineup and the uncertainty surrounding the injury, the Phillies can only hope this scare proves to be minor rather than the start of a longer absence.
