Phillies Could Make Stunning Don Mattingly Decision After Season

Don Mattingly has steered the Phillies back into contention after taking over midseason, yet questions about his long-term future with the club keep circulating.

Mattingly, a veteran skipper, stepped in and quickly changed the tone. Players responded, and the Phillies started winning at a consistent clip.

His record since the switch stands at 70-42. That mark has pulled Philadelphia out of a sizable hole in the National League East.

What once looked like a 10.5-game deficit has shrunk to four games. The club now sits in position to make a serious postseason run.

Still, talk of Mattingly sitting on the hot seat has never fully quieted. Some inside baseball circles continue to wonder whether he will return after this season.

Reports earlier indicated the Phillies first approached former Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Cora declined at the time, preferring a break from the game.

Those same conversations have resurfaced in recent weeks. The possibility of Cora becoming available this winter has fueled fresh speculation.

MLB insider Robert Murray of FanSided offered the latest assessment of the situation.

“Mattingly is open to remaining the Phillies’ manager beyond the 2026 season, and he’s done a good job since taking over. The franchise has cut what was once a 10.5 game deficit in the National League East into only four games and look like a legitimate World Series threat. Mattingly is deserving of another go at it in Philadelphia, but the allure of Cora – and his connections to Dave Dombrowski – could be tough to overcome,” Murray wrote.

Front office leaders may wait to see how far the team advances in October before deciding. An early playoff exit could tilt the scales against keeping Mattingly.

Cora remains one of the more attractive names expected to hit the managerial market. His prior working relationship with Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski adds another layer.

Mattingly originally was viewed as an interim solution. The winning record he has posted this summer has complicated that original plan.

A deep postseason run, especially a championship, would make it far harder for the organization to move on. The roster already possesses the talent needed to compete for a title.

Everything now hinges on October results. How the Phillies perform when the games matter most will likely determine whether Mattingly stays or the club pursues another direction.
