Phillies Enter Dubious MLB Company After Being Swept By Astros

The Phillies' trip down to Houston is one their players and fans would both quickly like to forget.

Philadelphia was swept out clearly by the Astros - the third time this season they've failed to win a game during a road series. But this one featured an especially bad performance from the offense to cancel out some great pitching, and it's landed the team in some unpleasant company.

According to Paul Casella of MLB.com, only nine teams had ever been swept while allowing five runs or less in an entire series. The Phillies just became the 10th in league history.

As shown by the list above, three of the franchises to have done so now play in a different city - and in the case of the Baltimore Orioles, under an entirely different identity.

The previous instance occurred June 16-18, 2014, when the Minnesota Twins lost three straight to the Boston Red Sox by scores of 1-0, 2-1, and 2-1 again.

The Phillies' offense scored only one run in this series - a sacrifice fly in the top of the 8th inning Thursday. Most of the lineup had unimpressive stat lines throughout the series.

The struggles started from the top of the lineup. Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Nick Castellanos went a collective 6-for-46 with 18 strikeouts. Bohm was hitless in all three games.

It's an all-too familiar problem with the current Philly hitting core - a tendency to go ice cold out of nowhere. While it was without Bryce Harper, who the team hopes will return soon, it still wasted three beautiful pitching performances.

Ranger Suárez, Zack Wheeler, and Cristopher Sánchez tossed a combined 19.2 innings and struck out 26 Astro batters. Each starter only allowed one run, yet two of them ended up with the loss.
