Phillies Facing Massive Aaron Nola Problem

Aaron Nola's 7-year, $172 million contract that was signed during the 2023-2024 offseason has not progressed the way the Philadelphia Phillies had hoped.

Nola had long been a workhorse for the Phillies before signing his large contract. He effectively ate-innings while limiting damage.

Since signing, the 33-year-old has become arguable the worst starter in Major League Baseball, with 2026 seemingly being rock bottom.

The former All-Star has started 21 game for Philadelphia in 2026, he's posted a horrid 5.82 ERA with 112 strikeouts and 25 home runs allowed in 108 1/3 innings.

Home runs have long been an issue for Aaron Nola. Since 2023, the right-hander has given up 105 home runs, the most in baseball.

The Phillies have not won a game where Aaron Nola has started since June 24. His days on the bump have become a scheduled loss.

With such a large contract and four years remaining, Nola's contract is most likely untradable, not to mention Nola's no trade clause.

Another issue that has plagued Nola over his career is that "one big inning." He could be rolling through hitters and then has to labor through one inning which ruins his outing.

A way to fix this issue could be by moving Nola to the bullpen as a bulk reliever. Limiting the amount of innings he throws should allow him to gain his plus pitches back and revive some of his confidence.

No matter what, if the Phillies are looking to have a real shot at a World Series title this season, Nola cannot start a playoff game.

The team will look to trade for a starter (or two) at the August 3 Trade Deadline.
