It was a rough a weekend for the Philadelphia Phillies and their starting shortstop.
The Phillies lost two out of three games to the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend and were shutout in two of those games. It was the performance by Trea Turner, however, that was perhaps the most concerning for the Phillies.
After going 0-for-4 on Sunday, Turner went a woeful 1-for-13 against Milwaukee and struck out an alarming six times. The 32-year-old is now slashing .219/.269/.330 with seven home runs, 21 RBI and a dismal OPS of .599 in 70 games this season.
The three-time All-Star is in just the fourth year of a lucrative 11-year, $300 million contract he inked with the Phillies during the 2022-23 offseason. With that contract looming over the Phillies' heads along with Turner's ongoing struggles, interim manager Don Mattingly was asked about the possibility of sitting Turner after Sunday's game.
“Trea’s just not having success right now,” Mattingly said. “When you’re not having success, it never looks good. I know Trea’s struggling to get it going and all that, but we’ll look at it day-to-day, where he’s at, and over the next probably let’s say two weeks to three.”
“We’re going to try to start getting a mixture of guys getting off their feet a little bit. And Trea [could] possibly be one of those guys, too. Just like everybody else," Mattingly added.
"It's something to look at, talk about ..."

It goes without saying that this has been the most brutal stretch for Turner at the plate over his 12 years in the major leagues. Despite dropping him from the leadoff spot early in the season with the hopes of turning things around, the struggles have remained.
While the Phillies have been able to climb their way to the second Wild Card in the National League ever since the aforementioned Mattingly took over following the dismissal of Rob Thomson, the Phillies still need their star shortstop to snap out of his slump.
The Phillies and Turner will now return home this week to begin a six-game homestand with the first of three against the Miami Marlins. Maybe another standing ovation for Turner from the Philly faithful is needed?
