The Philadelphia Phillies signed Kyle Schwarber to a four-year, $79 million contract in 2022, and the veteran has been a star for the Phillies for three-plus years.
But with Schwarber's contract expiring at the end of the 2025 season, he'll become a free agent, and it may be the end of his tenure in Philadelphia.
“We don’t want to lose him,” Phillies president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski said (h/t motorcyclesports.net). "But I think your responsibility, as somebody in my job, is to make your club better in other ways.”
Schwarber and the Phillies had initial conversations around a contract extension in the Spring, but it never surpassed those initial stages. Now, both sides are focused on the season and have decided to wait until its conclusion to revisit a possible extension.
This means Schwarber will have the chance to test the free agent market, and the Phillies will have to decide whether they want to match Schwarber's offers or let the fan favorite move on to a new team.
"Of course, you don’t want to lose a Kyle Schwarber. He’s a unique talent and he’s a quality individual," Dombrowski said at Citizen's Bank Park on Sunday. "I've lost free-agent players in the past that we've gone out and been able to do things. Again, not that you want to lose him. But I don't think it's the end of any window or anything."
Although the Phillies have expressed they want to work out an extension with Schwarber once the season ends, the verbiage from Bombrowski suggests they've also already accepted what life may be like without the 13-year veteran.

Despite hitting around .200 in his first two years with the Phillies, Schwarber's power has always been there. He launched 93 homers in his first two years and drove in nearly 200 runs.
The Phillies' DH has improved his batting average over the last two years, hitting around .250, and is on pace for a career year in 2025. Schwarber has collected 24 home runs and 55 RBI before the All-Star break.
The Phillies currently sit at 47-32 with a 1.5 game lead over the New York Mets in the National League East, and hold the second-best record in the NL. Philadelphia is poised for another World Series run in 2025, but it might be the last with Schwarber in a Phillies' jersey.
