Phillies' Kyle Schwarber out with calf strain; could miss upcoming series vs. Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies saw their seven-game winning streak halted on Thursday, falling to the Miami Marlins, 3-0

The shutout wasn't the only loss the Phillies suffered as slugging outfielder Kyle Schwarber exited the game early with a calf strain.

After walking in the fifth inning, infielder Edmundo Sosa pinch ran for Schwarber, who didn't appear to be in any discomfort. After the game, the Phillies said Schwarber had a mild calf strain, and he's considered day-to-day.

While Schwarber's injury could be worse, the timing isn't the best.

In the middle of the wildcard hunt in the NL, the Phillies aren't likely to rush their All-Star left fielder back and risk losing him for even more time. So, Schwarber could likely miss some, if not all, of one of the team's biggest series of the season.

On Friday, the Phillies open up a huge three-game set on the road against the NL East-leading New York Mets.

The Mets currently lead the division by seven games over the second-place Atlanta Braves, with the Phillies sitting 10.5 games behind the pace.

Philadelphia is just 3-9 against New York this season. In their most recent series, the Mets swept the Phillies in a three-game set at Citi Field in late May.

The Phillies will look to cool down the Mets, who've won six straight games and 15 of their last 17. However, the Phillies are scheduled to face Max Scherzer and Jacob DeGrom this weekend. Subtract Schwarber from the lineup, and the task gets even taller for the Phillies.

Schwarber leads the NL with 34 home runs this season. The 29-year-old has driven in 69 runs this season while batting .212/.314/.504 in 108 games.
