Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber reacts to injury scare vs. Marlins

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins by a final score of 8-2 on Friday night. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber suffered an injury scare during the contest, however.

Schwarber exited late in the game after feeling soreness in his back. The Phillies slugger is not too concerned about the issue, though.

“I just wanted to get out of there,” Schwarber said, via MLB.com. “I’ll probably take tomorrow off just to make sure we’re good to go. I think hopefully I’ll wake up tomorrow feeling better, and we’ll keep going.”

Phillies manager Rob Thomson echoed a similar sentiment.

“Schwarber came up with a sore back,” Thomson said, via Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia. “We’ll have to reevaluate that tomorrow but I don’t think it’s serious.”

The Phillies will reevaluate Schwarber over the weekend. The hope is that he avoided any kind of serious injury. The MLB season is a long 162-game grind, and players are going to experience soreness. Still, Philadelphia is proceeding with caution nonetheless.

Schwarber and Thomson’s optimistic outlooks leave reason to believe the Phillies designated hitter will be fine, though.

Schwarber’s difficult 2024 season

Schwarber, a two-time All-Star, has struggled to begin the ’24 campaign. He is currently slashing just .217/.320/.401/.722. Schwarber also leads the league with 59 strikeouts.

It should be noted that Schwarber has led the league in strikeouts over the past two seasons. Yet, he still hit 46 home runs in 2022 and 47 in 2023.

He has become a boom-or-bust option at the plate. Schwarber also draws quite a few walks, so he is a true three-outcome player. He is on a similar trajectory in 2024, as Schwarber already has nine home runs and 24 walks in addition to his 59 strikeouts.

Philadelphia would like Schwarber to develop more consistency as an all-around threat at the plate. As long as he continues to produce elite power numbers, though, they will live with the strikeouts.

For now, the Phillies are just hoping that Schwarber will be able to return soon following his injury scare.

Phillies playing well to begin ’24 campaign

The Atlanta Braves were expected to win the National League East. They certainly still have time to win the division. Philadelphia currently leads the division with a 27-12 record record. They are holding a two-game lead over Atlanta.

It is going to be a competitive division race. Both the Braves and Phillies feature legitimate World Series potential.

Of course, health will be of the utmost importance. Star shortstop Trea Turner recently went on the injured list. So losing Schwarber, despite his inconsistency at the plate, would be a major blow for the Phillies without question.

Fortunately, as both Kyle Schwarber and Rob Thomson mentioned, the Phillies are optimistic that the Philadelphia slugger will be alright. Nevertheless, the Phillies will closely monitor the situation moving forward.

Either way, he is not expected to play on Saturday against the Marlins. Philadelphia will look to earn another victory against Miami despite Schwarber’s expected absence on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM EST.
