Phillies Move Struggling Third Baseman Down in Lineup

The Philadelphia Phillies have been experimenting with two different lineups this season, but after one player's extended struggles, there is now another change coming.

Manager Rob Thomson has decided to move third baseman Alec Bohm all the way down to the seventh spot in the lineup due to his cold streak at the plate. Bohm is hitting just .178 with no home runs, one double, and three RBI through 10 games. He went 0-5 with four strikeouts last night and is now 1-17 while batting fourth.

Instead, right fielder Nick Castellanos will bat in the cleanup spot tonight when the Phillies take on Atlanta Braves righty Spencer Schwellenbach.

These struggles are reminiscent of the end of last season, when Bohm went from an All-Star Game starter and the National League leader in doubles to hitting .170 in September and being benched in Game Two of the NLDS.

They're also something Philly can't afford to have last for too long.

Bohm was shopped around in the offseason, but he ultimately ended up back in Philly to remain their everyday third baseman. They hoped he could bounce back to the form that drove in 97 runs and again provide protection for Bryce Harper, but that hasn't happened early on.

Meanwhile, Emundo Sosa - the same guy who subbed in for Alec during that playoff game last fall - has been his polar opposite at the plate. He's 11 for 23 (.478) with four doubles and six RBI and has been plugged in at five different positions to frequently be in the lineup.

If Bohm doesn't heat up soon, then Thomson may keep Sosa at the hot corner in his place... or the front office could reopen trade talks and shop for another third baseman.
