Johan Rojas saw limited action during Philadelphia Phillies’ spring training. After a strong showing in the Dominican Winter League, the speedy center fielder entered camp with a right shoulder injury, causing him to primarily serve as designated hitter before returning to his position this past week.
With two minor league options remaining, there was a chance Rojas could start the season in Triple-A to get up to speed. Rojas confirmed to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki that won’t be the case, as he will start the 2025 season with the Phillies, backing up Brandon Marsh.
The Dominican-born outfielder will also change his number from 18 to 23, previously worn by relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman last season. No reason for the change was given.
Johan Rojas has been told he made the team. He is switching from No. 18 to No. 23 this season.

Rojas was the primary man out in center last season, starting 103 games there and subbing in an additional 13 times. He only committed two errors all season, and that plus defense is still an asset - even if his bat doesn't develop as Philly hoped.
Rojas hit .243 last season - a steep drop from .302 as a rookie - with 18 extra-base hits, 32 RBI, and 47 runs scored. He’s looked sharp this spring, batting .289 with four extra-base hits and seven RBI in 45 at-bats.
With Rojas officially on the 26-man roster, the Phillies had only one more decision before Opening Day. Both Kody Clemens and Buddy Kennedy are out of options. With only one bench spot remaining, Philly chose to keep Clemens as the final infielder and will attempt to trade Kennedy.
The Phillies face the Washington Nationals on Thursday, March 27, at 4 p.m. ET.
