Phillies Outfielder Someone Who Could Be Moved
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

There are still some other moves that could be made for the Philadelphia Phillies this offseason as they attempt to add to their championship-caliber roster.

Jordan Montgomery and Cody Bellinger are two signings that would give them a boost, but price point will be a major issue for both parties.

If the Phillies are able to land one of these high-profile players, they would have to make an additional roster move on their current 40-man roster.

Tim Kelly of Phillies Nation thinks their current veteran outfielder Jake Cave could be a piece the front office is considering moving.

"... so if the Phillies can upgrade at fourth outfielder, Cave might be traded or DFA'd to increase bench flexibility," he writes.

The lefty slugger appeared in 65 games with Philadelphia last season, posting a slash line of .212/.272/.348 with five home runs and 21 RBI. He also played 59 games with their Triple-A affiliate, doing much better at the plate.

The 31-year-old is out of minor league options so he would pass through waivers, allowing other teams to potentially claim him, if the Phillies do decide to designate him for assignment.

If Montgomery is ultimately the free agent addition they make, it would be a strange decision to DFA Cave because their outfield depth is already thin following Brandon Marsh's surgery.

That continues to be an area the front office is looking to address, but it's unclear if they could do this by trading Cave.

He's been a .231/.293/.401 hitter during his six-year career. His OPS+ is 89, meaning he's a below-average batter, and he's only played in more than 70 games three times.

Cave has fluctuated between the MLB and minors throughout his career, so perhaps another team could look to give him more of an opportunity with their big league roster.
